'It Belongs To You'—A Surgeon's Plan To Tokenize Your Own Health Data (Forbes)
Forbes has published an article exploring a recent interview with Dr. Chirag Patel, who asserts that blockchain will allow the consumer to tokenize their own health data.
“Dr. Chirag Patel wants you to own your health data the way you own anything else, and he is betting a blockchain is how you finally will.
‘Human beings are sharing their data pretty widely right now, whether it’s wearables, whether it’s your cell phone provider, whether it’s your car,’ the surgeon, ESPN sports-medicine commentator and founder of BAiO said in an interview. ‘There's an initiative that we're leading to be able to tokenize your own data, and be able to own that data that belongs to you.’
‘There is not currently a blockchain aspect to this,’ he said of the wider platform [BAiO]. ‘That tokenization piece,’ he added, ‘would be one of the bigger blockchain components' further down the road.’”
Dr. Patel provides examples of how blockchain can facilitate patient care: “For a physician, the consent problem is not abstract. ‘Say you're my patient and you tell me, hey, doc, can you go ahead and transfer my records to this other doctor,’ Patel said. ‘I would need to have you complete a series of consents in order to be able to go ahead and transmit your data to that other provider.’ Moving that permission layer onto a smart contract, he argues, is the unglamorous first step toward data people actually control.”
